Music Lessons London

Group Classes

In the last couple of years Key To Music has successfully made the transition into an accredited music service providers for various councils in London.  We have teachers in a variety of schools in the Hammersmith and Fulham council and in Acton Council Schools and are in talks with various other London to roll out our formula.

Here is a sample list of group classes on offer to councils and schools, all of which have the ability to be AQA accredited.

DRUMB LESSONS LONDON

i)          Junk drums
This is a very immediate and engaging course especially with younger children. We can either prepare drums to use, or look at creating a programme in which we make instruments. If it's for younger children, cartons/bottles/boxes/bins would be the main ingredients, if they are older, a wider variety of materials might be appropriate. This option might require a degree of co-ordination with CDT or other in-school departments.

ii)         Samba
Latin big band rhythms offer scope for group participation as the rhythms are very recognisable and there are many different elements (eg claves conga guiro timbales tambourine) each of which could be represented by a section. This can be taken to a more advanced level. This can also be a combined with Samba dance classes.

iii)        African
African rhythms also can be separated into different sections and rendered by a group; in both Latin & African courses. This course would need a certain number of Djembe drums to make up the bulk of the instrumentation that could then be fleshed out with other more common percussion instruments.  This can be combined with an African dance course for an exciting cross-over performance.

GUITAR LESSONS LONDON

i)         Beginners I
Whole class guitar instruction for beginners would cover open chords, simple song forms such as Blues, and repertoire for the class to play in unison or in two parts

ii)         Beginners II
A course following on from the beginners to expand chord repertoire, rhythm work, performance and maybe some lead melody lines.

iii)        Riff-Zone
A 10 week course where pupils learn a different classic rock riff each week and then participate in a group performamce of a full band backed medley of the riffs at the end of the course.

iv)         Classical Guitar Course
A 10 week course focusing in on techniques implicit in the classical and folk style.  So along with learning about notation and reading music, the pupils will get an introduction to the finger picking style.

SINGING LESSONS LONDON

i)          Introduction to singing
Regular work on warm-ups and basic pointers on technique.
This would include looking at the different sounds that can be accessed in the voice. Singing in unison, singing in parts, singing rounds, people singing alone or in smaller groups and then as a whole class.

ii)         Rap Vocal
Where pupils will be instructed in lyric writing and performance in the Rap style.  They will also get a chance to work on their own beats and to record their creations.

Iii)       Gospel Choir/Band
Students will be learning a Gospel song from a contemporary repertoire. The sessions will start by exploring the student’s vocal potential and ability to pitch and harmonize.  In addition to this we can offer a second tutor who would be running a Gospel Band which would compliment the choir and allow a greater number of students to participate.

KEYBOARD ORCHESTRA

This is a course designed to not only teach the students the rudiments of learning the keyboard as a piano (thus introducing them to the notions of basic theory) but also, crucially, to learn how to operate the keyboard as an electronic instrument designed to be played ensemble.  This is an exciting and musically rich course that introduces the notion of voicing, harmony and rhythm all using the wide-ranging capabilities of the electronic keyboard.

DANCE

i)          Contemporary Street Dance
This is a workshop which will combine contemporary dance with street dance. The aim will be for the tutor to teach the students a dance routine but students will also be encourage to use their creativity and choreograph their own moves. The goal is to work for a final performance to an audwience. This workshop is also suitable to mixed groups and would work best with students who have a natural inclination for dancing.

ii)         African Dance
This is also a unisex dance but may appeal more to a female group though boys may enjoy it just as much. The dance routine will be put together using moves from different parts of Africa ie, west, south, etc. This is a very energetic dance which would work best would with live drumming accompaniment but if not possible the tutor can also use recorded music.

iii)        Gamboot Dance
The sessions will consist in learning different dance steps from this South African slave dance. It is an energetic and noisy dance and appeals to groups that enjoy movement and percussion.
For this dance students are required to wear trainers, boots or ideally wellies. And students can make some kind of ankle chains made with bottle tops to add to the sound.

SONGWRITING / RECORDING

Looking at the different aspects that make up a song – melody, harmony & rhythm- and how these can be expressed, to instantly create a mood.  Including the use techniques to generate themes and lyrics for songs. The song would be written and recorded over the course using a portable studio brought in by KTM.

This could be a principally vocal piece, with accompaniment orchestrated by the facilitator, or the class could be allocated different roles in the first weeks of the course (ie percussion section, vocal section, etc).  One could also harness the already existing instrumental abilities of members of the class.

ROCK BAND

This is a workshop where pupils that already play instruments can get expert tuition from a KTM multi-instrumentalist about the skills inherent in playing in a band and performing in front of an audience.  The content will be based upon the rendering of already existing pop/rock tracks, and thus understanding the nature of ensemble playing.  Also bands will be taught composition skills and invited to compose and perform their own songs.

GENERAL MUSICANSHIP

This class is designed to introduce the children to elements of musicianship studies (composition; improvisation; theory; history; aural training) in as practical way as possible, emphasising the relevence to performing. Also it functions to ensure the children know what these areas of study entail, so that in future years when it comes to choosing one musicianship lesson, they can make an informed choice.
